Yale

Yale accepted a whopping 7.5% of it's applicants this year. After being sure to fill spots needed on their 33 varsity athletic teams, taking students from all 50 states and dozens of foreign countries, it's fair to assume that students from upstate New York had an even more difficult time getting in this year.
Yale's 1800 freshmen are placed in to one of 12 residential colleges which they remain part of for all four years. This helps students feel like they are at a much smaller school. Each 'college' has it's own living and dining areas and most even have their own quad. Of course, there is plenty of interaction between the communities so students are not 'stuck' with the 450 kids in their college.
New Haven, CT is less than 3 hours from here and a bustling small city. The campus is part of the community and not secluded from the city, except for the residential quads. 5 presidents are Yale alum. So is super actress Jodie Foster. The engineering program has a 1 to 1 faculty to student ratio and is very well regarded.
